Vancouver-based medical device company Arbutus Medical celebrates 5 years in business by shipping surgical tools to safely treat and improve lives of 50,000+ human patients
December 4, 2019 – Five years after being founded, Arbutus Medical has reached a milestone of shipping affordable surgical tools to more than 30 counties that are capable of safely treating and improving the lives of more than 53,000 human patients and 38,000 animal patients around the world.
“We set out to create radically affordable orthopedic tools that would break down barriers to safe surgery, and are proud to have reached this point in our growth after only five years in business,” says Lawrence Buchan, co-founder and CEO of Arbutus Medical. “We’ve expanded our offerings to cover not just global health, but also veterinary and military medicine. In five years, we are aiming to reach two million patients in countries all over the globe with an expanded set of offerings.”
Through expert medical engineering and an ethos of frugal innovation, BC-based Arbutus Medical has designed and commercialized a portfolio of medical devices that can improve care for millions of patients worldwide. Their DrillCover Technology is a reusable liquid and pathogen-proof sterile enclosure that envelopes a non-sterile tool and fully seals the power transmission through the sterile barrier. It provides surgeons with an orthopedic drill at a significantly lower price than traditional medical power tools, providing a safe and sterile power tool alternative that is also lightweight and packable.
Arbutus Medical was founded in December 2014 by a group of biomedical engineers from the University of British Columbia’s Engineers in Scrubs program. Today the company offers three product lines: the Drillcover Hex for non-cannulated drilling or driving; the SawCover System, a powerful and durable oscillating hardware saw; and the DrillCover PRO System, a cannulated drill-reamer with quick-connect capability. Arbutus Medical is a registered establishment with the US FDA and holds an ISO13485 Quality Certificate. The DrillCover Systems family is also licensed as a Class II medical device by Health Canada.
