Arbutus Medical discusses commercialization and technology at German Global Health Conference talk

October 21, 2019 – As an invited speaker for the 31st International Congress of the Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT) in Heilbronn, Germany last week, Arbutus Medical’s co-founder Elise Huisman spoke to a large crowd about how Arbutus Medical has developed and commercialized their Drillcover surgical tools for the global health market.

“I presented to a full room at the Congress describing how Arbutus Medical came to be founded and the challenges for global health we see around access to safe surgery,” says Elise Huisman Director of Business Development and co-founder of Arbutus Medical. “We are one of the few companies that has developed a product and put it in the market, so there was a lot of interest in hearing about how Arbutus Medical has commercialized our products while maintaining our social mission of ‘safe surgery for all.’”

The annual Congress attracts academics, engineers, physicians, and others interested in medical innovation and technology. The focus of this year’s Congress was on how new technology drives medicine. Huisman’s presentation was part of a stream on affordable devices for global surgery, and her presentation was titled “Development of an orthopaedic drill cover.”

Through expert medical engineering and user-centred innovation, Arbutus Medical has designed and commercialized a portfolio of medical devices that can improve care for millions of patients worldwide. Their Drillcover Technology provides surgeons with an orthopedic drill at a significantly lower price than traditional medical power tools, providing a reusable liquid and pathogen-proof sterile enclosure that envelopes a non-sterile tool and fully seals the power transmission through the sterile barrier.

The International Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT) is an international society, formed in 1989 by an innovative group of medical practitioners dedicated to the multidisciplinary advancement of minimally invasive therapy in an attempt to reduce patient trauma arising from traditional surgical operations or radiological interventions. The current membership base includes representatives from most medical specialties, instrument manufacturing, biomedical engineering and research out of more than 35 countries.
